Consumer Challenge Quiz
The Consumer Challenge Quiz is for children with learning difficulties and aims to help these vulnerable people gain more confidence and to be more informed consumers. The questions are aimed to be fun and informative for all and include a range of topics such as consumer rights, food hygiene, money management and general safety.
The first round of the competition will take place in the local borough depending on the number of schools. The winner will then go forward to the regional finals followed by the national final which is held at the CTSI annual Conference.
For some children, travelling a long way from home for the first time to attend the final can be very daunting however the knowledge they gain through the quiz is remarkable and makes the whole competition worth while experience for all.

The importance of this competition cannot be underestimated. It has been designed for children with learning difficulties to increase their knowledge of their rights and to help them become confident consumers. This particularly vulnerable group of young people often with physical disabilities as well as learning difficulties has their own particular challenges, and this competition enables them to not only grow their knowledge but their confidence as young consumers as well.
Their journey to Bournemouth was as exciting challenge in itself, with some 40 children from Wightwick Hall school in Staffordshire and Woodeaton Manor School in Oxfordshire coming along to enjoy a day full of new experiences and learning opportunities.
The children made their way round the exhibition hall, meeting exhibitors who had participated in a treasure hunt to test the young people's consumer knowledge. It was great fun and a delight to observe over lunch, where the young people were entertained by a magician and tested on what they had learnt from the treasure hunt and from speaking with exhibitors, and the information they gleamed from visiting a number of exhibition stands was just unbelievable. Feedback has been great, with one child from Wightwick Hall school in Staffordshire saying “I have had a fantastic day and I want to thank you for bringing me on such a fantastic journey!!!”
It really does make it all worthwhile, and this wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the hard work, dedication and organisation of the Consumer Empowerment Alliance who helped CTSI run the competition this year plus the support and generosity of our sponsors Currys/PC World, Experian, CTSI's College of fellows and Pertemps. Happy young people left Bournemouth with their new found knowledge, fantastic prizes, magic wands and goody bags, an emotional day for everyone.
