The Trading Standards Institute was founded in 1881. It represents Trading Standards professionals in the UK, and overseas - in local authorities, business and consumer sectors and in central government.

What we do

TSI exists to promote and protect the success of a modern economy. It aims to safeguard the health, safety and wellbeing of citizens. We achieve this by supporting our members to empower consumers, encourage honest business and target rogue traders.

  • We lobby and inform central UK and European Government and local government and their agencies, the local communities, businesses and consumers.

  • We encourage the exchange of ideas, professional views, experience and lively debate for their mutual benefit and greater effectiveness. To this end we commission debate through College of Fellows, research in appropriate fields of study and publishes reports of the findings.
  • We regularly meet and work with other bodies which share our ideals and objectives.
  • We educate the consumer, through running events such as National Consumer Week and the Young Consumers Competitions.
  • We host the annual Consumer Affairs & Trading Standards Conference & Exhibition. The largest event of its type in Europe, conference is an important date
  • We publish TS Today, which aims to keep practitioners and students up-to-date with consumer affairs and trading standards news. It incorporates topical issues, briefings, interviews and much more, we have now launched our digital version of this much respected journal.


BRDO is working towards a regulatory environment  in which businesses have the confidence to invest and grow and citizens and communities are properly protected. We do this by operating Primary Authority to ensure consistent regulation, improving the professionalism of front-line regulators, and giving businesses a say in their regulation.

  • helping regulators and businesses work together to solve local issues through local enterprise partnerships and other means

  •  providing technical assistance to other countries


 Chartered Institute of Environmental HealthThe Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) is a registered charity and the professional voice for environmental health.  We set standards, accredit courses and qualifications for the education of members and EHPs.

We provide information, evidence and policy advice to local and national government, environmental & public health practitioners in the public & private sectors.

As an Awarding Organisation, we provide over 60 certification qualification programmes which include food safety, health and safety, first aid, fire safety and environmental protection through a through a global network of over 10,000 registered trainers and training centres. We support our trainers and centres with events and training materials to ensure our qualifications are delivered to the highest standard.

As a campaigning organisation, we aim to promote improvements in environmental and public health policy. We are based in the UK with offices in London, Wales and Northern Ireland. We also operate in the USA, United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.

The trading arm of the CIEH is a wholly owned trading subsidiary which is charged with promoting the mission of the CIEH through trading activities. The profits are gift-aided to the CIEH to support the charitable objectives. Conferences, seminars and a comprehensive range of public health publications are organised by this side of the CIEH.

The CIEH also supports and runs the Institute of Food Safety, Integrity & Protection (IFSIP), which is a new membership organisation connecting all those who work to keep food safe, honest and healthy. It is built around sharing knowledge and insight to promote high standards of professional practice and new ways of working. It operates under the CIEH’s charitable objectives.

training together is a collaborative training partnership between TSI, CenTSA, North West Training Facility, South West Regional Assembly and the TSI Welsh Branch.
We deliver face to face training courses in each subject area of the Trading Standards Qualification Framework.
This provision ensures that there is at least one course of learning for every subject and there will be no cancellations of courses even if numbers are low.
As part of this partnership all candidates will have access to the collaborative training learning hub which contains all the course information; including presentations, handouts, activities and reading.
