Responsible Retailers lock up their knivesBusinesses in Lewisham and Catford have signed up to a Responsible Retailers Agreement (RRA) with Lewisham Council that has seen them remove larger, kitchen-type knives and blades from general sale and keep them securely locked.
The Responsible Retailers Agreement is a borough-wide campaign that puts the responsibility on businesses to act responsibly when selling products such as knives, super-strength alcohol, tobacco and fireworks to the general public. Supported by the Council and Lewisham Police, businesses sign up and work in partnership to ensure that they are compliant with legal regulations and responsibilities, and also think about the social impact that their business can have locally.
The Agreement stresses the influence that businesses can have on the local community, by helping to deter anti-social behaviour and crime through being a responsible retailer.
Retailers and butchers shops have signed up to an Agreement that ensures knives, lighters and age-restricted toys such as ‘BB’ guns, that can be used in a dangerous manner or used to cause harm, are securely locked away and out of plain sight and are only accessible by staff.
TK Maxx in Lewisham has taken a step further and removed all large, kitchen-type knives and blades, such as arts and craft knives from sale in its Lewisham store, only selling boxed cutlery sets.
So far 28 businesses in Lewisham and Catford have signed up to a Responsible Retailer Agreement for the sale of knives and officers continue work to encourage more businesses to join them. Other parts of the campaign will be aimed at tackling the restriction of the sale of super-strength alcohol and a clamp down on illicit tobacco sales will follow.
Responsible Retailers that sign up to the Agreement will display a window sticker to let people know that they are a Responsible Retailer.
Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, said: “Reducing knife-enabled crime is a top priority for the Safer Lewisham Partnership. Removing knives from sale, or making sure that they are securely locked away by retailers, is one means of making sure that people intent on committing crime with a knife have another avenue of causing disruption and harm to our community removed from them. Working in partnership we will continue to work together to reduce knife crime in Lewisham.”
Councillor Janet Daby, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “Removing knives and other dangerous objects that can be used to cause harm or injury is a major step to making it as hard as possible for people to cause trouble on our streets. I applaud our local retailers who understand the important role that they can play in making Lewisham a safer place.”
Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: “The Responsible Retailers Agreement helps the Council, police and businesses work together, making sure that businesses are aware of, and are complying with their legal duties and licensing responsibilities. Working together, we can help rid the borough of illegal and harmful products.”
Further Responsible Retailers work on restricting the sale of super-strength alcohol and the sale/purchase of illicit tobacco will follow.
