Powys young consumers reach semis of national competition
A team of young consumers from a Powys high school have reached the semi final of a prestigious national competition.
Pupils Toby Purvis, Joe Bignell, Charlie Mills and Bethan Miles from Crickhowell High School represented Powys in the Welsh Young Consumers Competition which was held at the Pavilion in Llandrindod Wells on Tuesday (12 March).
The annual competition sees team of four, aged between 14 and 18 years old, compete in a quiz with contestants facing challenging questions on a wide range of consumer issues. The competition is co-ordinated by the Trading Standards Institute.
Coached by their teachers Mrs Kate Thomas and Mr John Clarke, the Crickhowell pupils battled against 10 other teams from across Wales, getting through the elimination rounds to achieve a place in the semi-final but narrowly missed out on a place in the final. The eventual winners were pupils from Brynteg Comprehensive in Bridgend.
Ken Yorston, Powys County Council's Trading Standards Manager and Chair of Wales Heads of Trading Standards (WHoTS), was impressed by the level of knowledge shown by the pupils.
"Young Consumers is a fantastic competition, which is not only fun and challenging but teaches our young people about core consumer, legal and social responsibilities. The feedback we receive about this competition is overwhelmingly positive," he said.
"On behalf of WHoTS, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the teachers and support staff who spend valuable time preparing their teams for the competition. I congratulate all of the students for their commitment and effort."
The organisers wish to thank the competition's sponsors Hoover Foundation, Co-operative Cymru Wales, Brecon Carreg, HASBRO and Disney for their contributions to this year's event.
