TSI review shows compliance with tobacco products display ban is high
On the first anniversary of the ban to display tobacco products in large shops in England a report by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) shows compliance is high.
TSI’s tobacco control specialist, Jane MacGregor said the outcome of "The display of tobacco products: a rapid review of compliance in business premises" report was testament to the collaborative approach taken ahead of implementation.
She said: "Comprehensive guidance was issued ahead of the Tobacco Advertising and Promotions (Display) (England) Regulations 2010 in collaboration with regulators and business organisations – the incredibly high compliance levels suggest this approach was a success and this will inform the way these regulations are implemented for smaller businesses who will have to comply from April 2015.
"It is really pleasing to see how well these regulations have been received, particularly against the backdrop of serious reservations raised by some businesses in advance of their implementation.
"Most of the feedback we received from staff working in tobacco kiosks was positive, with faulty mechanisms on the display doors causing most issues. To address problems with frustrated customers unaware of the changes to the law we recommend an awareness campaign targeting members of the public ahead of April 2015."
