Lord Harris returns to discuss trading standards

Chairman and Councillor with counterfeit goodsHaringey's Aladdin's cave of confiscated goods was displayed to a very welcome visitor last month.

Former Haringey Council leader Lord Toby Harris, the new chairman of the National Trading Standards Board, visited his old stomping ground to discuss the work of the trading standards team and meet the Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver.

Lord Harris was a Haringey councillor from 1978 to 2002 and Leader of the council from 1987 to 1999.

Lord Harris viewed the vast array of fake consumer goods confiscated in the borough by trading standards and enforcement officers, including fake Vodka, counterfeit sportswear and even fake condoms.

Cllr Canver said: "Trading standards officers protect consumers and honest traders from rogue businesses and from buying dangerous or counterfeit goods.

"It's great to know that Lord Harris will be championing the cause of trading standards officers to ensure they continue to use their authority to support the consumer."

Pictures show Lord Harris with Cllr Canver and some of the goods confiscated by Haringey trading standards officers.
