Emma receiving the Hero Award

Birmingham Post journalist receives TSI’s national Hero Award

Emma McKinney, the Consumer Editor at Birmingham Mail, has received a national Hero Award at the Trading Standards Institute's Conference in Brighton on Wednesday 19 June, having been praised for her hard work supporting Birmingham City Council's trading standard's efforts.

By providing front page coverage, shadowing officers on operations and showing a huge interest in the outcomes achieved, Emma has provided trading standards with a valuable platform to raise awareness within the community and to keep residents informed.

Emma McKinney said: "I'm hugely honoured to receive this award. It is a privilege to work alongside watchdogs such as Birmingham Trading Standards to be able to help fight for consumers to protect them from unscrupulous rogues.

"I am constantly shocked and appalled by the lengths that rogue traders and con merchants will go to in a bid to rip-off their victims.

"Over the years, I have spoken to people from all walks of life who have fallen prey to some of the most callous crooks who do not think twice about fleecing people out of their hard-earned cash. It is only right that these crimes should be exposed by journalists like myself, not only to bring these offenders to justice, but also to help protect consumers from further exploitation."

Jacqui Kennedy, Birmingham City Council's Director of Regulation and Enforcement, said: "Throughout, Emma has maintained our confidence when targeting particular individuals and organisations and has been testimony to her professionalism."

Leon Livermore, TSI's chief executive said: "Emma's motivation and dedication is a credit to her profession and we are delighted to have presented her with the TSI Hero Award.

"The support of journalists like Emma is invaluable in helping us raise awareness of the essential work done by our trading standards officers to keep our communities safe and healthy.  This kind of media coverage helps put the spot light on scams and rogues, and is of tremendous value in protecting and empowering consumers.”
