Hertfordshire Volunteers receive TSI Hero Award

Volunteers make all the difference as eyes and ears for trading standards Community group receives national Hero Award from TSI

An innovative community volunteer group has received a Hero Award at the Trading Standards Institute’s Conference in Brighton on Thursday 20 June for the significant contribution it has made to consumer protection in the Hertfordshire.

The 19 volunteers, aged 19 – 75, gave 1,800 hours of their time to consumer protection in the Hertfordshire Trading Standards Community Volunteers’ first full year in 2012.

Richard Thake, Hertfordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Planning, said: “These volunteers have made a tremendous contribution to our trading standards service, expanding our eyes and ears in the community. The time given up by these individuals to support our multi-agency operations, teaming up with our frontline officers, has enabled us to extend our activities, and reach a far greater number of tradesmen than in previous years.

“The volunteers have been trained in many areas of trading standards work and have been involved with counterfeit goods raids, test purchasing, distribution of blind cord safety packs and the promotion of safer neighbourhoods by having an overt presence in local streets.

“We are on track to have volunteers in every area of the county so that we can respond rapidly to incidents taking place.”

Mark Winter, one of the scheme’s volunteers, said: “Participating in this scheme has been a fantastic experience that has enabled me to not only gain greater appreciation and understanding of trading standards, but also to help improve the community I live in.”

TSI’s chief executive Leon Livermore praised the initiative for hitting the right notes for trading standards in the new consumer landscape.

Mr Livermore said: “With everyone feeling the squeeze from budget cuts local authorities are having to think innovatively about how we can do more with less.

“The Hertfordshire Trading Standards Community Volunteers scheme is a prime example of how this can be done successfully, resulting in a win-win situation for those taking part and the communities they live in.

“I am delighted to have presented the group with a TSI Hero Award, giving it well deserved national recognition both at the level of the individual volunteers and at the collective trading standards level.”
