Business rates scam targets Powys

Businesses in Powys are being warned of a scam which claims can save businesses paying rates for the next three years.

Powys County Council’s trading standards service has issued the warning after businesses in the county have been targeted by unsolicited phone calls.

The scam is targeting businesses with a rateable value below £6,000 and currently receives 100 per cent small business rate relief if occupied.

The caller states to potential targets that their business will shortly have to pay 50 per cent business rates but for a fee of £399, they can save them paying any business rates for the next three years.

There are no planed charges to the small business rate scheme in Wales.

Cllr John Powell, Cabinet Member responsible for trading standards, said: “Fraudsters are ‘cold calling’ businesses purely to obtain money by deception. I would urge businesses to treat all unsolicited phone calls with scepticism and any business that is contacted is advised not to make any payment to the caller or to give out their bank details.”

Any businesses in the county who has queries regarding business rates can email
