TSI consultation on consumer codes

Jo SwinsonThe new consumer minister Jo Swinson has launched the Trading Standards Institute’s (TSI) ‘consumer code approval scheme criteria’ consultation

The minister received a warm welcome at the Association of Chief Trading Standards Officer’s (ACTSO) Workshop at London’s Guildhall on 24 October, where she gave a presentation on the changing landscape in which the trading standards profession operates.

As part of that Ms Swinson announced the new consultation to improve codes of practice, published by TSI today, which will aim to make the existing consumer code system more robust.

The minister said: “I am delighted to launch the Trading Standards Institute’s consumer code consultation for a more robust set of approval criteria that will help reduce consumer detriment.

“It is a timely change that will help empower consumers and support good business.”

TSI’s chief executive Ron Gainsford said: “The Government asked us earlier this year to develop a successor to the Office of Fair Trading’s ‘consumer codes approval scheme’.

“This consultation paper is about the codes approval criteria and is relevant to businesses of all sizes, trade associations, consumers, consumer law enforcers, and consumer organisations.

“In developing our proposals for the new codes approval criteria, we have sought to strike the right balance between reducing consumer detriment and broadening the reach of the scheme.

"We aim to reduce consumer detriment for more transactions, by more consumers, in more circumstances, and help create growth for those businesses who trade on fairness and conscience rather than price alone.”

The ‘consumer codes approval scheme – new codes approval criteria’ consultation can be found on the TSI website and closes on 14 December 2012.

The TSI Consumer Code Approval Scheme will be launched April 2013.
