Our policy and campaigns
The Chartered Trading Standards Institute provides a voice for trading standards professionals at a national level by working with experts in the field to influence policy. Our campaigns raise awareness of the challenges that the profession faces in protecting consumers and supporting businesses.
The government recently anounced a 'Cutting Red Tape' review of all local government impacts on business. The consultation period for this review is now over and you can read CTSI's submission to the review here.
Keen to know more about the outcomes of 'Cutting Red Tape'? We will be including all the latest updates on the reviews progress here in the coming months.
CTSI provides briefings for politicians and policy makers on potential policy changes. We also engage with parliamentarians through our latest campaigns. We are currently working on signing MPs up as SCAMbassadors for their communities - please do get in touch if you want advice on how to engage your local MP with the initiative.
Our network of lead officers represents CTSI in expert groups and policy forums nationally and give advice to trading standards professionals on specialist areas of trading standards law.
CTSI responds to consultations by government and other stakeholders on consumer protection, trading standards and related issues.

Why do trading standards services matter?
Trading standards professionals work in local authorities across the UK to enforce approximately 250 separate pieces of legislation. They cover a wide range of subject areas from agriculture and animal health to weights and measures.
By maintaining standards and enforcing the law in these areas, trading standards services contribute to four key priorities for local and central government:
- Facilitating economic recovery
- Improving the health of society
- Protecting the environment
- Strengthening community safety
