Teams from schools battle it out for the Young Consumers of the Year 2013 title

Teenagers from 8 schools from across the country are going head to head in the grand final of the Young Consumers of the Year Competition, taking place on Wednesday 18 June at the Trading Standards Institute’s consumer affairs and trading standards conference in Brighton.

The 8 teams of four 14 to 17-year-olds have made it to the big event of this national knockout consumer quiz after coming top in qualifying heats and regional finals.  The schools represented in Brighton for the University Challenge style final where they will be put through their paces by Quizmaster Terry Crook are:

The Kingswinford School – Dudley
Altrincham Grammar School for Boys – Trafford
Abbey Grange Academy - Leeds
Chatham and Clarendon Grammar School Federation - Kent
Central Foundation Boys School – Islington
Boroughmuir High School – Edinburgh
St. Albans RC High School - Torfaen
Brynteg Comprehensive School - Bridgend

Leon Livermore, chief executive at the Trading Standards Institute said: “We are really proud of the way this competition is getting teenagers in hundreds of schools all over the UK interested in consumer skills and knowledge that will help them start off their adult lives as informed and savvy consumers.
“The youngsters taking part are a real inspiration and I look forward to seeing the buzz of excitement we have around the final every year at Conference!”

James Jones, head of consumer affairs for Experian, the YCOY’s regular main sponsor, said: “We are delighted to support Young Consumers of the Year, which gives thousands of youngsters up and down the country the opportunity to swot up on important consumer issues and then put that knowledge to the test.
“It’s absolutely vital that we give our young people the knowledge and skills they need to develop into confident and successful consumers, particularly at a time when the financial landscape has probably never been so challenging.”
