Edinburgh teenagers are national consumer challenge quiz champions 2013
Students from Kaimes School, Edinburgh beat off tough competition from 8 other schools in the grand finals of the Consumer Challenge Quiz at the Trading Standards Institute conference in Brighton this year.
The students all have learning difficulties and represent a very vulnerable group of consumers. The quiz teaches them about consumer issues well as improving their self esteem and team working skills.
The winning team from Kaimes School made up of Tomasz, Hamish, Robson and Daniel, each took home a tablet pc, vouchers, a bag full of prizes and £1,000 for their school.
Teacher Gwen Coleman, who supported the boys in preparing for the competition said: "We are so delighted and proud of the boys, what a fantastic final. They have enjoyed the consumer rights lessons so much, they have really lapped it up – this is the icing on the cake."
The teenagers were thrilled to be winners, saying: "It feels brilliant; it is like we are celebrities! We weren't nervous, we relaxed before the final by playing cards so we were able to just stay calm and carry on." They reached the final by winning a tough semi-final by just two points and then clinched the title in a nail-biting finish.
The main sponsor of the quiz is Currys/PC World together with Experian, Pertemps, Wilkinson, Primark, New Era, Financial Ombudsman Service, BSI, BMW, Birmingham Assay Office and Claire’s.
TSI chief executive Leon Livermore said: “It is fantastic to see so many young people take part in this event. I’m confident that the knowledge they gain will stand them in good stead for their life ahead as consumers. In today’s increasingly complex world, it is becoming more and more important for everyone to know about their rights and responsibilities so they can stand up for themselves and make informed decisions.
“It was a very exciting final. Congratulations to Kaimes School; very well done!”
