Guide launched to help new motorists
Costs, legal rights and responsibilities, mechanical jargon – anyone set to sit behind the wheel for the first time is faced with a whole new world of information that may seem daunting.
The Trading Standards Institute (TSI) has launched a new guide with the backing of HPI and Motor Codes Limited, to help these new motorists make better informed decisions.
On the Road – A Guide to Buying Your First Car includes chapters packed with helpful hints on
* learning to drive
* buying a car
* dealing with the most common problems or faults
* maintaining a car
* road safety
TSI’s chief executive Ron Gainsford said: ‘Raising consumers’ awareness of their rights and responsibilities is very important to us and we know that young drivers remain a comparatively high risk group.
‘It is with this in mind that we have launched On the Road, a leaflet which clearly sets out information that motorists need when they are buying and maintaining their car and helps them to make safe and well informed decisions on the roads.’
Nicola Johnson, Consumer Services Manager for HPI said: ‘HPI is delighted to be supporting TSI in their endeavour to guide young car buyers through the minefield of buying their first car.
‘It’s easy to be taken in by shiny paintwork, but the fact is with unscrupulous sellers constantly finding new ways to con unsuspecting buyers out of their cash, there’s much more to it than simply relying on what the eye alone can see. ‘
Motor Codes director Chris Mason said: ‘The new booklet sets out how young drivers can find honest and reliable garages that charge fair prices and provide straight forward explanations of work required are the golden choice for any motorist.
‘There is also helpful advice on what to do is things go wrong, including a free advice line - 0800 692 0825.’
