Consumer minister gives his first speech in new role
The new consumer minister of the coalition Government Edward Davey spoke of his commitment to be a champion for trading standards at the Trading Standards Institute’s (TSI) conference in Edinburgh.
He took this first platform in his new role as an opportunity to confirm his support for trading standards professionals while talking about an inevitable agenda for change.
Mr Davey said: 'I want to place on record a clear recognition that trading standards are part of the front line of the economy and it is my intention to be a champion for trading standards in Whitehall.
'I believe that what trading standards do is not only important, but it is vital for consumers, businesses and our economy’s recovery.
'We all know that there has to be an agenda of change, not least because of the challenges of the internet, climate change and globalisation. The question we have to ask is how do we continue to protect the vulnerable?
'It is important to maintain a local face but to operate across boundaries to operate one step ahead of villains.
'I know the trading standards profession is addressing these issues and these are our priorities too.'
But there was no room for illusions about budgets cuts that lie ahead and the Minister highlighted cooperation between and within local authorities as an element to achieve efficiencies.
He said: 'Deficit reduction is an issue that we are taking head-on and trading standards will have to shoulder its share.
'Can we do the same, or more, for less? Salami-slicing will not work here so we must look for other solutions like deepening further existing cooperation across and within local authority boundaries.
'I am looking forward to the joint task of preserving the excellence of the trading standards service in these difficult times and taking it to another level.'
