Kent teenagers become national consumer champions 2010
A team from Kent beat off tough competition from schools from eight regions to become Young Consumers of the Year 2010.
The four boys won the title at the Trading Standards Institute’s Conference in Edinburgh today, taking home the College of Fellows trophy, medals, £50 Argos gift vouchers and £50 Halfords vouchers each, plus £1,000 and multimedia equipment for their school.
Hundreds of schools from across the country entered this year's competition to find Britain's best-informed young consumers with heats taking place throughout the spring.
The winning team – made up of team captain Craig Burns, Christopher Hewett, Ho Chung Law and Ben Parish, all 17 years olds from Chatham House Grammar School, beat last year’s champions Boroughmuir from Edinburgh, runners-up Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn, from Carmarthenshire, and Arthur Terry School from Sutton Coldfield in the grand final.
Team captain Craig said: 'We didn’t expect to get this far, it has been amazing'.
Teacher Dave Burney applauded the efforts of his team saying: 'They worked hard to succeed in this competition that they have squeezed in in the middle of A-level revision and two A-level maths exams this week'.
He said it had been the most competitive and closest fought competition that they had ever been involved in.
Young Consumers of the Year, organised by TSI, offers young people the chance to show their awareness of their environment, and their ability to be streetwise about what they eat, what they buy and how they manage their money.
TSI chief executive Ron Gainsford said: 'It is fantastic to see so many young people take part in this event – they will have all have gained important knowledge and awareness which will stay with them for life.
'In today’s increasingly complex markets it is more and more important for consumers to know about their rights and responsibilities to stand up for themselves and to make informed decisions. It was a very exciting, nail-biting final with all four teams neck and neck until the very end - congratulations to Chatham House, very well done!’
