Teenagers show they won’t be challenged on their rights

Pupils from Oxfordshire are celebrating after they emerged victorious at a national consumer knowledge quiz for children with learning difficulties.

The team of four from Woodeaton Manor School won the Consumer Challenge Quiz national final, held at the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) annual conference and exhibition in Edinburgh this week.

Five teams participated in the closely run final; Walton Hall School from Staffordshire, Cynon Taf - Ysgol Hen Felin from Rhondda, Hazel Oak School from Solihull and King Edward Seventh Science & Sports College from Leicestershire . Quiz master, Liz Barclay encouraged the teams and challenged the audience with the tricky questions from rounds involving finance and travel to questions on salt content in food.

Woodeaton Manor School took home the Consumer Challenge Quiz Trophy, a cheque for £1,000 for the school, and each contestant won a top-notch Advent laptop from DSG, European electronic retailer for companies such as Dixons and Currys.

Deputy Head, Timothy Burns from Woodeaton Manor said:  'All the pupils are very proud of their achievement and of representing Oxfordshire. The boys, Aaron Walton, Alex Waltham and Jake Deacon were kept in check and triumphantly captained by Jane Bartlett. They felt a real sense of achievement and what made it so special was the close competition and intensity of the final. The team travelled to Edinburgh on Sunday and spent Monday looking round the city, preparing for the big final on Tuesday.

The Consumer Challenge Quiz is an initiative organised by Mike Gutowski, principal education officer for Birmingham City Council's trading standards service.

Mike said: 'We launched the Consumer Challenge Quiz a few years ago for children with learning difficulties. They are a particularly vulnerable group and the quiz helps them to become informed consumers. Teachers tell us that it also boosts their self esteem, team working and life skills.'
