TSI salutes hard-working journalists

Reporters whose campaigning scoops have exposed scams and rogue traders are set to be honoured by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI).

TSI, in partnership with Consumer Direct, is set to salute journalists and press officers at its 2008 Media Awards.

The awards aim to recognise the profound impact media professionals have on the profile of trading standards work.

Anyone involved in the trading standards or Consumer Direct communities can nominate those working in the media who have gone the extra mile to champion consumer issues.

Awards will be presented in a range of categories at a special ceremony to be held on 17 November as part of TSI's National Consumer Week.

Ron Gainsford, chief executive of TSI, said: 'The media can be our closest allies when it comes to exposing and publicising rogue practices and dangerous merchandise.

'By working together we can communicate our message effectively and educate consumers and businesses about the values of trading fairly.

'I would like to thank Consumer Direct for its continued support and involvement in these awards.'

Elisa Mitchell, who won Regional Consumer Journalist of the Year in 2007 for the work she has done for ITV Meridian Tonight, said: 'Winning the award gave me the confidence to take my role as ITV Meridian South consumer correspondent to the next level.

'It enabled me to develop my relationship with trading standards services across the region to work together on a number of hard-hitting investigations with the aim of protecting consumers at the heart of what we do.'

Consumer Direct is a Government-backed telephone and online consumer advice service which works in partnership with Local Authority Trading Standards. It provides clear, practical and impartial advice and information to help consumers resolve problems and disagreements with suppliers of goods and services. Consumer Direct is available from 0800-1830 Monday to Friday, and 0900-1300 Saturday, excluding bank and public holidays.
