TSI advises Europe's biggest online spenders to shop safely
Recently gathered research from Ofcom shows that UK consumers are the highest spenders in Europe when it comes to shopping online. With this in mind, the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) would like to remind consumers about the potential risks involved.
The total value of online purchases that UK internet users said they made in the last six months was £1,031. This was higher than any other major European country and nearly double the amount spent by Germany, who was the second highest.
The Chief Executive of the Trading Standards Institute, Ron Gainsford, has said: “It is great news that UK shoppers are embracing the internet for shopping. This is an area that will continue to grow and help our economy. However, as consumers become more confident, we want them to remember the CHECK list and to consult Consumer Direct’s website if they do have the misfortune to be scammed. This information will be used by trading standards to chisel out the rogue traders and see they are punished.”
The research also showed that internet users within the UK made more than double the number of online purchases than the other major European countries.
With online shopping also growing to encompass purchases from companies in other european countries, Jed Mayatt, Service Director for UKECC, www.ukecc.net said: 'Our service is here to help consumers on what to do should they experience any problems while shopping online with non-UK websites'. Also there to help before your purchase is the European Consumer Centre for Services, www.ukecc-services.net
