Birthday Honour for past TSI chairman Peter Denard

A senior member of the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) - Peter Denard, Surrey County Council’s trading standards chief for almost two decades - has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to local government and to consumers.
TSI is delighted that Peter, its former chairman from 2008 to 2009, has been recognised for his tireless efforts over two decades in outstanding work within the trading standards profession.

TSI’s chief executive Ron Gainsford said: 'Peter has always exercised leadership in the profession - his leadership qualities were never more ably demonstrated than when he led his Trading Standards and Surrey County Council team in the fight against the foot and mouth outbreak that was in the forefront of consumers’ minds.

'He is an accomplished transatlantic sailor and ‘skipper Peter’ truly steered his trading standards team through a challenging time during foot and mouth.

'Peter and I did our trading standards training together in the 1970s and we have been professional colleagues and friends ever since. As a friend, past chairman and colleague director of TSI, I am delighted to see his special qualities so wonderfully recognised.'

Peter is already no stranger to meeting the Royals, having attended a Garden Party hosted by the Queen at Buckingham Palace in recognition of his successful leadership of setting up the advice service, Consumer Direct for the South East of England. He has also accepted, on behalf of Surrey County Council, an Excellence in Trading Standards award from Princess Anne.

Peter, a Fellow and Associate Director of TSI, said: 'I can only really accept this honour on behalf of the great team of people that I have worked with over the years, because it is that teamwork that has ensured Surrey Trading Standards’ continuing success.'

Two further stalwarts of the Trading Standards profession - both members of TSI - have also received awards in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. They are Graham Russell, Chief Executive of the Local Better Regulation Office, and Mrs Mary Risso JP, Director of the Office of Consumer Affairs Gibraltar.

Graham Russell received an MBE for services to Business and Consumers.  He was a local authority regulator for more than 20 years before becoming LBRO’s founding Chief Executive in 2007.

TSI’s chief executive Ron Gainsford said: 'Graham had the foresight and courage to go the extra mile within trading standards and to successfully seek appointment as the Chief Executive of the Local Better Regulation Office when it was set up in 2007. He brings huge experience and ability in local authority regulation to the role.

'Graham has been a constant advocate for, as well as a challenger of, local authority trading standards and other regulatory services ever since.

'Before that, he was already showing special qualities of innovation in service delivery and professional practice when leading trading standards at Staffordshire County Council.

'I am delighted to see this recognition of a colleague, TSI member and friend.'

Mrs Mary Risso JP received an MBE for her services to women and the community in Gibraltar.

TSI’s chief executive Ron Gainsford said: 'Mary has been a great friend and ally of TSI during the last decade. She has been a constant source of encouragement and support since she became a member of the Trading Standards Institute in 2002.

'She has an invaluable wealth of knowledge and experience to draw from to help consumers and businesses.

'Mary has been instrumental in our developing an ever-stronger TSI relationship with the Government of Gibraltar in support of consumers and good business.'
