Lee-on-Solent woman receives national Hero award from TSI
Lee-on-Solent resident Judi Cooper has received an award for her help in protecting an elderly friend of the family from handing over money to scam artists.
The man had become very confused and as a result had become a vulnerable consumer and a victim of high-value scams. He had already fallen victim to a boiler room fraud and other telephone and postal scams, losing an estimated £60,000 and was growing increasingly distressed and confused with no family to support him.
Judi worked with Hampshire's Trading Standards, the Police and safeguarding teams to ensure that the elderly man’s interests were represented and that his wellbeing needs were met. Through daily visits, Judi was also able to intercept scam mail to ensure that he no longer sent money to overseas scammers.
The award was made at the 2011 National Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards Conference and Exhibition in Bournemouth (Tuesday 21 June to Thursday 23 June).
Accepting her award, Judi said: “This award came as a complete surprise - all I was doing was helping a long term friend. I would like to thank Hampshire Trading Standards for the award - without them and the various Agencies working together, more and more elderly people would be part of boiler room scams.
“I know this is just the tip of the iceberg, but I sincerely hope that the investigations continue and I am grateful for the opportunity to bring awareness to vulnerable adults.”
Graham Belton, Trading Standards Team Manager at Hampshire Council Council, said in his nomination that Judi is cheerfully selfless in her approach and achieves a warm and supportive role without hope of personal benefit.
