Local team scoops national award for services to the vulnerable
The Senior Citizen Liaison Team (SCLT) in Bishopsworth, Bristol has received national recognition from the Trading Standards Institute for its tailored neighbourhood policing service to the vulnerable.
The award was made at the TSI’s annual Conference in Bournemouth today (Tuesday 21 June).
The SCLT was established in the Bishopsworth neighbourhood policing area as a direct measure to provide a tailored neighbourhood policing service to a vulnerable segment of the community.
The team, set up in December 2009, aims to reduce the fear of crime amongst the older adult community through awareness and education, and to reduce the likelihood of senior citizens becoming victims of crime in the first instance.
Sergeant Ashley Jones, project director of the Senior Citizen Liaison Team, said: ‘It is a very humbling experience to receive this award from the highly respected Trading Standards Institute, particularly in the company of so many dedicated professionals who work so tirelessly in service of others.
‘We do not do this job for recognition and reward, as we see that in the faces of the vulnerable senior citizens that we help on a daily basis, but it is always a delight to get a pat on the back, and we are very grateful for this recognition of our efforts.’
The team attends community centres and other areas where older adults meet or gather. The six liaison officers offer crime prevention advice and can provide up to date guidance on crime trends locally.
So far, the team has given presentations to thousands of older adults at community groups and social gatherings in order to reduce the fear of crime and increase the sense of community confidence.
It is hoped that this innovation can be extended to other areas of Bristol that would also benefit from such a service.
