Trading Standards Champion becomes Honorary Member of TSI

Derek Allen, Executive Director of Local Government Regulation (LGR), has been recognised for his commitment and service to local government and trading standards by being made an Honorary Member of the Trading Standards Institute (TSI).

Having trained as an Environmental Health Officer at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, where he specialised in food safety and then private sector housing, Derek became Head of Regulatory Services at Thurrock Council. It was there that he had responsibility for Town Planning, Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Building Control and Highways enforcement. He became Executive Director for LACORS (Local Authority Coordinators of Regulatory Services) in 2002.

During the past nine years under Derek’s leadership, LACORS, and more recently named Local Government Regulation (LGR) widened its portfolio of services and, as well as its support for trading standards, it has also supported related services including food safety and standards, animal health and welfare including companion animals, health and safety at work, alcohol and public entertainment licensing and gambling reform.

LGR works with other bodies to influence central government to ensure that there is proper recognition of the important and vital role that local authority regulatory services play in ensuring the quality of life of local communities.

Derek Allen has been a committed champion of trading standards and public protection and has always been a strong supporter of TSI.

Ron Gainsford, Chief Executive of TSI said “I am delighted that TSI is able to offer Derek Allen Honorary Membership of the Institute, in recognition of all he has done for trading standards and local authority regulatory services. The support he has shown to TSI and others, over the last nine years has been of immeasurable value. And, as LGR changes its structure and Derek leaves his role in July, we know we can count on his continued support and encouragement.”
