Say Hello to... the Ubuntu Inclusive Mentoring Scheme
The Ubuntu Inclusive Mentoring Scheme was devised by Giles Speid and facilitated by Wendy Martin, and the Ubuntu Awards exist to recognise those who have completed this nine‑month journey of inclusive leadership development.

Ubuntu, a Zulu word meaning “I am what I am because of who we all are,” sits at the heart of the programme. That spirit guides every conversation between mentees — current or aspiring leaders — and their paired managers. Over the course of the scheme, they meet confidentially to explore real‑world issues connected to the nine legally protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.
These discussions are grounded in the lived experiences and challenges faced across the UK. For example:
-
How do our services adapt interview processes for people with neurodivergent conditions?
-
Disabled people remain the most discriminated against in relation to pay — have we examined our own pay trends, and do they reflect the same pattern?
-
Much is said about “British values.” Are these truly unique to the UK, or do all nations hold their own shared values?
The Ubuntu Awards now enter their fifth year, celebrating those who have embraced this reflective, challenging, and transformative mentoring experience.
