Remembering Barry James Woodhead

These words are from colleagues and friends of Barry:

He was a well-liked colleague and friend in the Trading Standards services at Surrey and the London Boroughs.

Barry started as an Assistant in the Woking, Surrey office. Upon qualifying he went to Berkshire, but when Chief TSO, Bob Kilsby took over the reins at Surrey and immediately got the salaries increased, he went back to Surrey. He worked up to Divisional Inspector at Woking and then went to Head Office. Later he left on health grounds but got better and went on to work at Sutton TS.

We both knew Barry very well from work and social gatherings in Southwest London. My wife has fond memories of Barry having worked with him for quite some time in Sutton Trading Standards.

Other colleagues remember meeting Barry for Christmas meals at the Jovial Sailor in Ripley, near his home, up until a few years ago when a fall impacted his health and mobility. He was meticulous and detailed in his work always using a ruler to write his reports so the lines would be parallel, and he presented prosecutions in the Magistrates' court.

He was a dedicated advocate of Trading Standards. His austere and apparent grumpy demeanour, which he presented to senior management within the Council was a facade; underneath it all he was a kind, warm, humorous, and supportive manager.

His family were his world, and he was immensely proud of his "boys" and devoted to Carolyn whose passing left a huge hole in his life. He was well liked within his village and used to frequent the local hostelries; he also supported issues within the local parish council. Barry was in Sutton and believe it was about 10 years plus from the mid 1990's.

Barry’s funeral was held at Woking Crematorium on 15th July in the presence of his family and friends, to whom we offer our sincere condolences.
