David Elwyn Gwynedd Jones, known to family, friends and colleagues as Dafydd lived a life shaped by service, practical skill, quiet determination and deep ties to Anglesey. He died peacefully at home in Malltraeth on 8 February 2026, aged 80, after a long illness.

At the heart of Dafydd’s life were his wife Ceinwen, his daughter Ann, his son-in-law Aled, and his brother Ieuan. Those who knew him remember a man of loyalty, good humour and steady presence, someone who gave generously of his abilities, whether to his family, his profession or his community.
Born in Deganwy, North Wales, in 1945, Dafydd grew up on Anglesey and spent his schooldays in Rhosybol. Even as a young person he was known for being capable, resourceful and dependable qualities that would become hallmarks of his working life and personal character.
Dafydd began his career in public service at a young age, qualifying as a Weights and Measures Inspector in 1968 with the Anglesey County Council. He soon showed considerable aptitude, particularly in investigating cases and bringing prosecutions under the rapidly evolving consumer legislation of the time. His commitment to learning continued throughout his career. He achieved an A grade in A Level Law and Constitutional Law and later gained a Diploma in Management Studies from Manchester Metropolitan University.
After qualifying with the then Anglesey County Council, Dafydd became a Divisional Officer following local government reorganisation in 1974, when Anglesey became part of Gwynedd County Council. By 1993 he had become County Trading Standards Officer for Gwynedd County Council, and in 1996 he was appointed Director of Public Protection for the newly formed Isle of Anglesey County Council. Over more than 30 years, Dafydd served the people of Anglesey with dedication, protecting consumers and supporting fair practice for businesses. He was a credit to his profession: knowledgeable, principled and deeply committed to achieving the best outcomes for his team, for Trading Standards, and for the wider community.
Dafydd’s expertise was especially recognised in matters relating to heavy goods vehicles. A holder of a Class 1 HGV licence, he played an important role in developing regular weight checks on heavy goods vehicles arriving at Holyhead Port during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, at a time when Holyhead had become the second largest roll-on/roll-off port in the United Kingdom after Dover. His professional knowledge and practical understanding earned him national recognition in this field.
Away from work, Dafydd was devoted to his family and to his local community. Following his retirement through ill health in 2000, he continued to give his time and energy to others, including as chair of the Malltraeth Ymlaen Community Group. He will also be remembered for his lifelong passion for steam trains and his enthusiasm for all things mechanical. A treasured family memory recalled in his eulogy delivered by his brother Ieuan was that, as a schoolboy, he would sometimes drive the school bus home, having packed his overalls in his school bag.
Family, friends and colleagues gathered at Bangor Crematorium on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, to celebrate Dafydd’s life and share memories of him. Donations in his memory were made towards Pulmonary Fibrosis Research.
Dafydd’s legacy is one of service, intelligence, kindness and quiet determination. A life well lived, and one that will continue to be remembered with warmth and gratitude.
