Celebrate... International Women's Day

Posted 08/03/24

Celebrating #InternationalWomensDay

This month, CTSI would like to recognise and celebrate the many women working in Trading Standards who, together, have pushed aside the barriers to what was, traditionally, always considered a very male-oriented career. The fact that women are now universally welcomed - and genuinely valued - in the profession, is a lasting testament to the tenacity and inestimable contributions of both the early pioneers and all the women who followed them.

While International Women's Day celebrates women’s social, economic, cultural and political achievements and gender quality on a single day, we appreciate the contribution our own colleagues have made - and continue to make - 365 days of the year.

What does IWD mean to Women in Trading Standards?

Tendy Lindsay, Immediate Post Chair of CTSI, focuses on leadership

“As Chair of CTSI, I have had the privilege to lead our organisation and we have had three women Chairs in succession, which is unprecedented at CTSI. Notwithstanding the challenges that come with being a woman in a leadership role, there are many opportunities that come with women in leadership roles”.

Louise Baxter, CTSI Lead Officer for Consumer Education and Advice

Louise started working with Trading Standards in 2002 and became passionate for protection of vulnerable consumers. In 2017, Louise was awarded an MBE for her service and dedication, saying “One of my proudest moments was being awarded an MBE. My late father would have been the proudest man in the world”.

Steph Young, CTSI Lead Officer for Animal Health and Welfare

Steph reflects on opportunities as a woman “I have always tried to achieve and give my best to any role that I undertake. I have been exceptionally fortunate in the opportunities that I have had in this life; sadly, not all women worldwide are that fortunate, often because of gender bias and discrimination. In Trading Standards, several women are in leadership positions and, with drive and determination, clearly add a lot of value to the profession, something that is worth celebrating.

What exactly is International Women's Day?

Marked annually on March 8th, International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.

Everyone, everywhere can play a part in helping forge gender equality. From a wide range of IWD campaigns, events, rallies, lobbying, and performances - to festivals, parties, fun runs, and celebrations - all IWD activity is valid. That's what makes IWD so inclusive.
