Keep safe and avoid a Halloween horror

Posted 19/10/20

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) is warning the public to keep safe this Halloween by following its safety guidance.

While coronavirus measures are likely to be the first thing on a parent's mind during this year's All Hallows' Eve, CTSI is reminding the public to also focus on product safety.

 CTSI safety tips for Halloween:

  • Wear face paint instead of a mask so you can see where you're going
  • If you are using a ‘dressing up costume’, wear a product that has had additional safety testing, such as that provided by the British Retail Consortium’s Code of Practrice
  • Check treats for potential allergies
  • Use LED lights instead of candles
  • Beware of choking hazards

Robert Chantry-Price, Lead Officer for Product Safety at CTSI, said:

"While coronavirus measures such as the rule of six and two-metre distancing may make trick-or-treating more restrictive this year, parents should not lose sight of the safety precautions they must take.

"Children should be kept away from flames, and fancy dress costumes should be CE-marked. To minimise flammability, dressing-up costumes should be CE marked and made according to the British Retail Consortium's flammability requirements."

For advice, the public can access CTSI's Halloween campaign hub, while businesses looking for free and impartial regulatory advice on product safety can visit Business Companion.
