Teenagers from Staffordshire are crowned consumer champions 2014

Posted 02/07/14

Pupils from Two Rivers School are celebrating after they emerged victorious at a national consumer knowledge quiz for children with learning difficulties. The foursome beat tough competition from eight other schools from across the UK in the grand finals of the Consumer Challenge Quiz (CCQ) held at the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) Conference in Harrogate.

Joshua Thompson, 17, Stacie Farmer, 17, Reece Machin, 16, Alex Stewart, 17, reached the winning score of correct answers after a nail-biting final, taking home the Consumer Challenge Quiz trophy, a cheque for £1,000 for the school and a host of goodies for each contestant including a Samsung Galaxy tablet.

TSI's chief executive Leon Livermore said: "The Consumer Challenge Quiz is a hugely valuable initiative for children with learning difficulties and the finals are always a real Conference highlight.

"The competition is a fun way to help this particularly vulnerable group of consumers become more aware of their rights, and of how to access help and advice. There are wider benefits too; the CCQ experience boosts the students' self esteem and confidence, along with team working and life skills."

Broadcaster Liz Barclay has acted as quiz master for the competition for more than 10 years, encouraging the teams and challenging the audience with the tricky questions from rounds involving finance and travel to questions on salt content in food.
