NEW - CTSI Professional Competency in Product Safety

This professional qualification has been developed by CTSIs experts to equip professionals working within product safety with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake this role. It is suitable for all those working in local authority market surveillance for products and will provide a basic competency which can be built on through experience and practice. For those interested in developing knowledge and skills in product safety who do not work in a market surveillance authority, the Business Certificate of Competency in Product Safety is also available.
The course will focus on law and practice in relation to market surveillance and effective use of the regulatory system and standards to take appropriate action in respect of unsafe products.
The CTSI Professional Qualification demonstrates knowledge and understanding of:
- Agencies responsible for the market surveillance of products
- Hazard identification, screen and formal testing
- Product and process risk assessment and decision making arising from this
- Examination, verification and challenge of conformity assessment documentation
- Data collection and intelligence development
- Risk management of the market through corrective actions
- The obligations of economic operators and market surveillance authorities
The qualification also assists in the development and assessment of the following skills:
- Practical enforcement skills relating to product examination, hazard identification, commissioning testing and other expert opinion.
- Conducting a risk assessment using the PRISM tool, building injury scenarios and using data to determine step probabilities or the use of estimation where necessary, and decision making about the appropriate risk management following this and monitoring the efficacy of this action.
- The use of safety notices as a risk management tool.
- The application of product standards, undertaking screen testing and commissioning formal testing.
- The examination of conformity assessment documentation, and decision making about a product’s likely compliance (or otherwise) as a result of this.
The online course consists of 5 training days, two case studies carried out in the workplace and concludes with a professional interview assessment.
There are online materials which are intended to underpin and support the training days, and these should be started prior to these wherever possible, particularly to support the knowledge and skills necessary for the case study.
This online course consists of 5 training days and the completion of two 3,000 word case studies and a professional interview assessment. You will have 5 months, from the course start date, to complete the case studies prior to sitting the professional interview exam.
There is a requirement of approximately 3 months of independent learning prior to the contact days, which is supported by resources available via the online portal.
These online materials must be completed in advance of the contact days.
